Let Food Be Thy Medicine. Yesterday as I drove home, I was disturbed by an interview that was playing on Voice of America over the radio. A doctor (I don’t remember his name) was speaking about the opiate/opium problem in America and all over the world. He was talking about how so many people in the world are addicted to pain medication and how this has become a huge epidemic in America and spreading all across the world. He went on talking about the problems in Healthcare, cost of Insurance, lack of insurance coverage and the need to find an alternative solution to this growing epidemic of treating pain with pain medication. He said how it’s so easy for a doctor to prescribe pain pills or perform a surgery to treat pain and how insurance companies will usually cover this kind of treatment and that most people would rather take the quick fix of taking a pill, be it a pain pill for pain or any other medication for illness or disease for that matter. He was concerned about the growing number of people who are addicted to pain medication and said that medicine needed to find an alternative solution to this growing epidemic. If they didn’t do this more people will die due to overdosing because the medication is no longer helping and therefore, they are needing to increase the dosage. If they don’t increase it these people turn to other desperate measures of using street drugs and end up overdosing and dying anyway.  Then the doctor mentioned alternative care such as acupuncture, acupressure and chiropractic care. The problem with these are most insurance companies will not pay for these alternative treatments, leaving doctors and patients with no other choice than to take a pain medication or to have an unnecessary surgery in hopes of treating the pain! What I never heard him say was anything about finding and treating the cause. Nor did he even mention other alternative such as Nutrition (Let Food Be Thy Medicine), Diet, Exercise, Stretching, Meditation, Yoga, Reiki, Art Therapy, Physical, Physio and Psychotherapies Without Drugs and Other Healing Remedies and Therapies. His suggestion shocked me. His solution was another drug to wean patients off the drug they are on. Too many of us have grown accustomed to and demand a quick fix for our pain, illness, disease, weight loss, or whatever our problem may be. Taking a drug is nothing more than a band aid masking and covering up the root cause of the pain, illness, disease, weight. Often surgery is what doctors resort to in hopes of eliminating the pain or problem, yet they never really addressed the cause of the problem that created the problem. Surgery in fact should be the very LAST RESORT AFTER finding the cause and trying to treat it, not as a treatment for the symptoms. Alternative therapies and care should always be sought out and we should look towards natural alternatives such as primary and secondary foods as treatments. Primary foods being the essentials in life that do not come in the form or food and drink that we put into our mouths, but are things like a spiritual practice, joy, social life, fulfilling happy relationships and home environment, home cooking, health, physical activity, creativity, education, career and finances. Secondary foods are the foods we eat and drink, what we put into our mouth. These foods should be wholesome, clean, all natural from nature, unprocessed foods that nourish our body. We should come to know and learn to listen to our body, because there is also no such thing as a one size fits all diet. One person’s food can be another person’s poison. So, know what you are eating and how your body reacts to the food you are eating. If you need to keep a journal, so you can know how you feel. Remove a food that you think may be triggering negative symptoms in your body. Use an elimination diet of known culprits if needed, to see how you feel without these foods. Slowly add these foods one by one back into your diet and see how your body reacts to it before adding another food. It may be immediately or after a few weeks if it causes you problems you know that your body reacts to this food. If it doesn’t you know this is not your problem and now it’s okay to add a new food back into your diet and do the same process.
